Perched above one of the busiest railway stations in the country, Madison Square Garden is the famous arena at the heart of Manhattan, home to the New York Knicks of basketball and the New York Rangers of ice hockey and a premier stage for concerts and events. The current building, the fourth to carry the name, opened in 1968 and seats roughly 20,000 depending on the configuration. The Garden's name long outlived its original location. The first two arenas stood at Madison Square, further downtown, before the venue moved twice; the present circular building rose controversially atop the demolished original Pennsylvania Station, a loss that helped galvanise the architectural preservation movement. The round arena and its distinctive cable-suspended roof have become a Midtown landmark in their own right. Few venues carry such a dense history of memorable nights. It has hosted championship boxing bouts, including storied heavyweight fights, political conventions, papal masses and countless landmark concerts, and certain musicians have made long residencies there a badge of honour. The Knicks and Rangers have played their home games beneath its roof for generations, giving it a near-mythic status among sports fans. A major renovation around 2011 modernised the interior, adding suspended skybridges that let spectators look straight down on the action and refreshing the concourses, while keeping the building on its tight, much-debated site above the station. For visitors the Garden is first and foremost an events venue, with tickets sold by game or show, but behind-the-scenes tours run on non-event days for those wanting to see the locker rooms and history displays. Its location above Penn Station and beside major subway lines makes it one of the most easily reached arenas anywhere, in the busy blocks near Herald Square and the Midtown shopping district. Its nickname, the World's Most Famous Arena, reflects a reputation built over decades of marquee events, and playing or performing there carries a particular prestige. The long-debated redevelopment of the cramped station beneath it has kept the venue's future a recurring topic in city planning.
