Set within the City Foundry development in the Midtown area of St. Louis, the Museum of Illusions is a hands-on attraction built around optical illusions and the science of how we perceive the world. Opened in 2024, it is one of the newer United States locations of a global chain that has turned the study of visual trickery into a playful, interactive outing. The chain was founded in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2015 by two friends and has expanded rapidly to dozens of sites across many countries. The St. Louis branch fills around 9,000 square feet inside a converted industrial complex, following the familiar template of rooms and exhibits designed to fool the eye: a swirling vortex tunnel, an Ames room that warps the apparent size of people, a tilted chamber, holograms and a kaleidoscope tunnel among them. Each illusion is paired with an explanation of the perception and psychology behind it, so the experience mixes entertainment with a thread of learning, and a set of puzzles and brain-teasers gives visitors something to wrestle with. The whole museum is meant to be touched, explored and photographed, making it a popular spot for group pictures. City Foundry itself, a redeveloped former foundry now home to a food hall, shops and entertainment, gives the museum a lively setting with plenty of nearby dining and parking. For visitors the museum is a short, engaging stop of an hour or two, well suited to families and groups. Tickets are bought online or on site, the exhibits are self-guided, and its location within the City Foundry complex makes it easy to combine with a meal or other activities under the same roof. The exhibits are pitched to suit families, couples and school groups alike, and the science panels lend the visit a thread of genuine learning beneath the entertainment. As one of the chain's corporate-run rather than franchised sites, it follows the established formula closely, and its home in the City Foundry complex means food, drink and other diversions are only steps away, making for an easy combined outing in Midtown.
