The largest natural and historical museum in the western United States, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County sits in Exposition Park, just south of downtown. Opened in 1913, it was the first dedicated museum in the city, and its original Beaux-Arts building, crowned by a domed rotunda, remains at the heart of a complex that has grown over more than a century. The collections span the natural world and human history alike, holding tens of millions of specimens and artefacts. Its dinosaur halls are a particular draw, displaying mounted skeletons including a dramatic trio of Tyrannosaurus rex at different ages, while other galleries cover mammals in habitat dioramas, gems and minerals, and the history of Los Angeles and California from indigenous cultures through the twentieth century. In recent years the museum has expanded outward as much as in. An indoor-outdoor Nature Gardens and a Nature Lab explore the wildlife that lives in the city itself, reflecting a shift toward urban nature, and the grand 1913 rotunda has been restored as a centrepiece. The institution also operates the nearby La Brea Tar Pits as part of the same organisation. Exposition Park around it holds other attractions, including a science centre and a rose garden, and sits beside a major university, making the area a cluster of museums and green space. For visitors the museum is a substantial outing well suited to families, with timed tickets and changing special exhibitions alongside the permanent halls. It is reachable by light rail and car, parking is available in the park, and its position among the other Exposition Park institutions makes it easy to combine with a broader day in the area. The museum is also a working research institution, its scientists studying everything from dinosaurs to the wildlife of the modern city, and its specimen collections rank among the largest in the country. A butterfly pavilion in spring, a spider pavilion in autumn and lively family programmes add seasonal draws, while the surrounding Exposition Park, with its rose garden and neighbouring science centre, rounds out a day in the area.
