Perched on a hilltop above the city and reached by its own driverless tram, the Getty Center is a museum and cultural campus as celebrated for its architecture and setting as for the art within. Opened in 1997 and clad in pale travertine stone and glass, the complex commands sweeping views across Los Angeles to the ocean and the mountains, and admission to it is free. The center was made possible by the vast endowment of the oil magnate J. Paul Getty, whose fortune funds one of the wealthiest arts institutions in the world. The architect Richard Meier designed the gleaming hilltop campus over many years, arranging a cluster of pavilions, courtyards and gardens around a central plaza, with the rough-cut travertine, much of it bearing fossil imprints, giving the modern buildings a timeless texture. The galleries hold European paintings, drawings, sculpture, decorative arts and photography, including works by old masters and Impressionists, among them a famous Van Gogh. Yet for many visitors the buildings, the changing play of light on the stone, and the spectacular Central Garden, a living artwork of terraced plantings and a stream designed by the artist Robert Irwin, are as memorable as the collection itself. A sister site, a re-created Roman villa near the coast, houses the institution's antiquities, while this hilltop campus focuses on later art. For visitors the Getty is free to enter, with a charge only for parking, and the tram ride up the hill is part of the experience. The combination of art, architecture, gardens and panoramic views makes it a rewarding half or full day, and it sits just off a major freeway on the city's west side, with timed parking reservations advised at busy times. The tram ride from the parking structure up the hillside builds anticipation, delivering visitors to a plaza with views that stretch across the basin to the sea. Beyond the galleries and gardens, the campus hosts concerts, talks and family programmes, and its hilltop perch makes it a popular spot to watch the sun set over the city. The combination of free admission and world-class art draws a broad and steady stream of visitors year-round.
