Behind the butcher counter of a century-old former auto body shop, the 1st Ward is a 5,000-square-foot concert and event space tucked inside the Chop Shop complex at 2033 West North Avenue in Chicago's Wicker Park neighbourhood. The building sits just west of the Milwaukee-Damen-North intersection, one of the city's busiest nightlife crossroads, and brings together encased meats, craft beer, cocktails, and live entertainment under a single roof. Designed by event professionals, the venue holds a standing-room capacity of roughly 450 and is outfitted with a state-of-the-art sound system, professional lighting rig, and an in-house booking and marketing department. The 1st Ward was conceived by Matt Woodburn, founder of the Art Institute of Chicago's After Dark event series, who opened the space in 2013 with the aim of creating a throwback feel and vibe for music concerts, fashion shows, and artist showcases. The ground floor of the complex houses a salumeria and gourmet butcher shop sourcing meats and cheeses from local farms. The restaurant and bar draws on those seasonal items for an evolving menu of steaks, pastas, fish, and seasonal fare. Downstairs, the Butcher Bar offers a casual atmosphere; upstairs, the Butcher's Brother provides a more refined dining experience. In warmer months a rooftop patio opens as a neighbourhood-hidden gem. Semi-private and private event options are available throughout the building for both daytime and evening functions. The venue books a broad calendar of indie rock, hip-hop, electronic, folk, and Americana acts, typically several nights a week. Hours run Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM for the restaurant, with event times varying. Wicker Park's dense concentration of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries makes the surrounding area an easy place to build an evening around a show.
