The Byham Theater at 101 Sixth Street in Pittsburgh's Cultural District is a 1,300-seat proscenium theatre operated by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Originally built as the Gayety Theater in 1903 and later operating as the Fulton Theater, the venue was acquired by the Trust in 1995, restored, and renamed the Byham Theater after a major gift from the Byham family. The intimate scale makes it the preferred Cultural District venue for dance companies, mid-size concerts, comedy, lectures, and special events that don't require the 2,800-seat Benedum Center down the block. The theatre's restored early-20th-century character -- decorative plasterwork, a spacious lobby, and excellent sightlines -- provides a more personal atmosphere for audiences and performers alike. The Byham sits within the Trust's network of Cultural District venues, which also includes the Benedum Center, Harris Theater, and O'Reilly Theater. Ticketing is handled through TrustArts.org and by phone. Adjacent parking garages and the Cultural District's walkable restaurant scene make the Byham a convenient evening-out destination.
