Constructed in a record 15 months and 24 days at a cost of 66 million dollars, the Delta Center opened on October 9, 1991, as the home of the Utah Jazz. Owner Larry H. Miller oversaw a fast-track build that used 155,000 cubic yards of concrete, 7.6 million pounds of reinforcing steel, and 80,300 square feet of glass. The arena's basketball capacity was originally 20,400, later reduced to 18,206 after a 125-million-dollar renovation in 2017. Located at 301 South Temple on the west side of downtown Salt Lake City, the arena welcomes approximately 1.8 million guests across more than 320 days of events each year. Landmark moments include the 1993 and 2023 NBA All-Star weekends, two NBA Finals, figure skating and short track speed skating events at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and sold-out concerts by Garth Brooks, U2, and The Rolling Stones. The venue also served as the home of the Utah Hockey Club beginning in 2024. Naming rights have cycled through Delta Center from 1991 to 2006, EnergySolutions Arena from 2006 to 2015, Vivint Smart Home Arena and then Vivint Arena through 2023, before Delta Air Lines reclaimed the naming rights in a homecoming deal effective July 2023. A multi-year renovation launched in April 2025 is transforming the arena bowl geometry to optimise hockey sightlines, raising hockey capacity from 11,131 to approximately 17,000 and basketball capacity to nearly 19,000 upon completion in 2027. The arena is owned by Smith Entertainment Group following Ryan and Ashley Smith's December 2020 acquisition from the Miller family. The venue includes 56 luxury suites and hosts concerts with capacity up to 22,000. The arena is served by the Arena TRAX station on the UTA light-rail Green Line, and multiple parking garages are within a two-block radius. Tickets and event information are available at deltacenter.com.
