Designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater opened on October 21, 2016, as a performing arts destination for Salt Lake City and the Intermountain West. The 119-million-dollar, five-storey building at 131 South Main Street features a dramatic six-storey lobby with retractable glass walls that turn the entrance into a beacon of light on Main Street. The primary performance space, the Delta Performance Hall, seats 2,468 in a canyon-inspired auditorium whose colour palette draws from the red rocks of southern Utah. The signature design element is a star-field ceiling that twinkles like a clear desert night sky above the audience. A 50-foot-wide stage equipped with the latest production technology hosts national touring Broadway shows through the Zions Bank Broadway at the Eccles series, concerts, comedy, and major entertainment events. The Regent Street Black Box, accessible from a separate Regent Street entrance, is an acoustically isolated 2,400-square-foot flexible space with 16-foot glass windows and movable seating platforms that accommodate 150 to 250 depending on configuration. Dance, film, music, theatrical productions, and private events fill its calendar. Before the show, patrons can dine at the Tin Angel at the Eccles, an in-house restaurant serving craft cocktails and charcuterie. Official tickets are sold through ArtTix. The Eccles Theater box office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with extended hours on performance days. The phone number is 801-355-2787. The Eccles Theater is managed by Salt Lake County Arts and Culture as part of a family of venues that includes the Capitol Theatre and Abravanel Hall. Free live entertainment is presented on the Main Street steps on Friday nights from June through September.
