With a current capacity of 21,944 and room to expand to 30,000, Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium stands as a showcase of what a mid-major university can achieve in football facilities. Located on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, the venue reopened on August 31, 2019 following a comprehensive $67.5 million renovation that replaced virtually every element of the former Foreman Field. The original Foreman Field dates to 1936, when it hosted a game between the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary's Norfolk Division, the institution that would become Old Dominion. By 2016, a Populous feasibility study concluded the aging structure could not be updated to meet modern building codes and recommended a full teardown and rebuild. The Virginia General Assembly approved the plan in 2017, and S.B. Ballard Construction completed the project in a single offseason, an engineering feat that drew industry attention. The rebuilt stadium features 15,962 new sideline seats placed 10 feet closer to the field than the old configuration, improving sightlines and crowd noise. Twenty-six luxury suites, 390 loge seats, and the Priority Automotive Club provide premium hospitality options, while a 20,000-square-foot open-deck social space on the upper concourse gives fans views of downtown Norfolk and the Norfolk Naval Station. The student section includes a dedicated entry and concession area. A new video board and custom audio system round out the gameday technology. The playing surface was named Kornblau Field in January 2019 after alumnus Barry Kornblau donated $3 million to the project. The stadium itself honors S.B. Ballard Construction for its central role in the rebuild. Beyond Monarchs football, the venue hosts concerts, community events, and visiting sporting fixtures. It sits at 5115 Hampton Boulevard, served by Hampton Roads Transit and surrounded by the urban campus of one of Virginia's largest public universities.
