Legends Field brought professional baseball back to Lexington, Kentucky for the first time since 1954 when it opened on May 9, 2001 as Applebee's Park. The 6,994-seat ballpark at 207 Legends Lane was part of a $23 million privately financed complex backed by 23 local investors led by principal owner Brad Redmond. Construction cost for the stadium itself came in at $13.5 million, and the response was immediate: 1,950 season tickets sold within hours of going on sale, setting a new South Atlantic League record at the time. The inaugural Lexington Legends squad rewarded that enthusiasm by winning 92 regular-season games and capturing the SAL championship in their first year. Field dimensions run 320 feet to left field, 401 feet to center, and 318 feet to right. The park offers a variety of seating options including reserved chair-backs, bleachers in left field, and an elevated picnic area in right field, though a full wrap-around concourse in the outfield is not part of the design. The ballpark has cycled through several naming-rights deals over its life, operating as Whitaker Bank Ballpark from 2011 to 2020, Lexington Legends Ballpark in 2021, Wild Health Field in 2022, Counter Clocks Field in 2023, and the current Legends Field. The Legends themselves have transitioned from a South Atlantic League affiliate to membership in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an official Partner League of Major League Baseball. In 2016 a $500,000 renovation widened the entry plaza, expanded the team store, and added the Bullpen Patio social area. Since 2020 the park has also served as the home field for the Transylvania University Pioneers baseball team, with a 20-year agreement signed in 2024 cementing that relationship. The stadium sits on North Broadway, roughly a mile from the Transylvania campus and easily accessible from central Lexington, bringing both minor-league summer ball and NCAA Division III spring games to the same intimate venue.
