Crowned by an iconic gold-anodized aluminum geodesic dome comprising 500 interlocking panels, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts at 100 South Virginia Street in downtown Reno, Nevada opened in January 1968 as the Pioneer Theater-Auditorium. The dome was inspired by the futuristic designs popularized by R. Buckminster Fuller, and architect William Gravelle of Bozalis, Dickinson, and Roloff championed the concept after viewing a similar structure in Fort Worth, Texas. Originally designed to serve as both a performing arts venue and convention hall with a 1,428-seat auditorium and meeting rooms on its lower level, the center has evolved into a dedicated 1,500-seat performing arts facility. In 1988 it was renamed the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and incorporated as a private nonprofit. In 2012, Washoe County deeded the land and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority deeded the building to the nonprofit organization. The center has been the artistic home of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra since 1969 and hosts resident companies including A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and Artown. Since 1995, the Broadway Comes to Reno series, now in partnership with Nederlander National Markets, has brought national touring productions to the stage. The Pioneer Center is listed on both the Nevada State Register and the National Register of Historic Places and hosts over 200 events per year.
