Located at 1788 El Prado, the museum has been a gathering place for nature lovers for over 150 years, interpreting the natural world of Southern California and the Baja California Peninsula through research, education, and exhibitions. The current building dates from the 1930s and underwent a major restoration and modernisation in 2001, blending historic refinement with contemporary convenience. Beyond its role as a museum, The Nat functions as one of Balboa Park's most distinctive event venues. The multi-level facility can accommodate up to 1,800 guests for reception-style events across five floors of exhibit and event spaces. The Sefton Grand Atrium, with its four-story translucent ceiling and granite floors, seats 275 for dinner or 500 for receptions. The 3,800-square-foot Giant Screen Theater provides a 300-seat venue for lectures, film screenings, concerts, and ceremonies with Dolby Digital sound and large-format projection. The El Mirador Rooftop Terrace offers 2,600 square feet of outdoor space with views of Balboa Park, the downtown skyline, the mountains, and San Diego Bay -- one of the only event rooftops in Balboa Park. The museum's regular programming includes Nat at Night on Fridays, extending hours until 11 PM with rooftop access, and Sunday brunch events. As a nonprofit, revenue from event bookings directly supports The Nat's ongoing research and environmental education mission.
