Waldo Stadium is a 30,200-seat college football stadium at 1903 West Michigan Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan, home of the Western Michigan University Broncos. Ground was broken in 1938 and the stadium opened on October 7, 1939, at a cost of 250,000 dollars, originally seating 15,000 with concrete stands on each side of the field, 52 eight-person boxes, and a press box. It was dedicated to WMU President Emeritus Dwight B. Waldo, the school's first president and a strong advocate of Bronco athletics. Capacity grew to 25,000 in 1973 when AstroTurf replaced natural grass and bleacher seating was added, then to the current 30,200 following a 1989 expansion. In 2003 the east end zone was enclosed by the twenty-five-million-dollar Donald J. Seelye Athletic Center, and in 2015 a new FieldTurf surface was installed through a two-million-dollar gift from WMU alum Alec Gores. The all-time attendance record of 36,361 was set on September 16, 2000. WMU has recorded ten perfect home seasons, including three in the 1940s and three in the 2000s.
