WorkPlay is a multi-venue entertainment complex at 500 23rd Street South in Birmingham, Alabama, housed in a former warehouse at the corner of 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue South. Founded in 2001 by the Hunter brothers -- Alan, Hugh, Randy, and Blake -- the 4.5-million-dollar renovation, designed by Neil Davis of Davis Architects, created a facility that combines live music, recording, and events under one roof. After ownership changes in 2011 and again in October 2023, when a group led by Johnny Grimes and Josh Williams purchased the property for 3.6 million dollars, WorkPlay was relaunched in February 2024 with renovations to the front bar (rebranded as Harmonic at WorkPlay) and a new intimate 300-capacity venue, the Canteen. The complex now houses three distinct performance spaces: the 500-capacity WorkPlay Theatre, the 950-capacity Soundstage, and the 300-capacity Canteen, all with world-class audio and lighting rigs.
