The Xfinity Center, originally known as the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts and still commonly called Great Woods, is a 19,900-capacity outdoor amphitheatre at 885 South Main Street in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Note: the venue's database listing shows Mansfield, OH, but the Xfinity Center is in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The thirteen-million-dollar, 106-acre venue was proposed in 1985 by Don Law, John E. Drew, and Sherman Wolf after Law concluded the New England region desperately needed a major outdoor concert facility. The site was chosen in Mansfield for its abundant land and its position within 40 miles of Providence, Boston, Worcester, and Cape Cod. Great Woods opened on June 13, 1986, with a performance by Yo-Yo Ma and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and an initial capacity of 12,000. In 1994 the capacity was expanded to the current 19,900: 7,000 reserved seats, 7,000 lawn seats, and 5,900 general admission. At its peak the venue hosted nearly 80 concerts per season, making it one of the busiest amphitheatres in New England. The venue has been renamed several times -- Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts (1999), Comcast Center (2008), and Xfinity Center (2014) -- and was named Billboard's Top Grossing Amphitheater in 2010. Operated by Live Nation New England, the season runs from mid-May through late September.
