This volcanic plug of dolerite and basalt, formed around 340 million years ago during the Carboniferous period, rises 130 metres above the surrounding terrain and provides the dramatic natural platform on which Edinburgh Castle has stood since at least the twelfth century. The rock's three sheer cliff faces, scoured by glacial action that carved the valley now occupied by Princes Street Gardens, made it one of the most naturally defensible sites in Scotland. The only practicable approach is from the east along the sloping ridge of the Royal Mile, a geological feature known as a crag-and-tail formation created when the glacier was forced to divide around the harder volcanic plug, depositing softer material in its lee. This single line of attack determined the castle's layout, with successive gatehouses and batteries concentrated along the eastern approach. Human occupation of the rock may predate recorded history: excavations have found evidence of Bronze Age settlement. The earliest confirmed fortification dates from the Iron Age, and by the medieval period the castle served as a royal residence, military stronghold, and seat of government. It was besieged more times than any other structure in Britain, changing hands between Scottish and English forces repeatedly during the Wars of Independence. The rock forms part of the UNESCO-inscribed Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site. While the castle itself charges admission, the exterior approaches and the views from the Esplanade and Princes Street Gardens are freely accessible. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place annually on the Esplanade at the rock's summit. The volcanic plug's geological composition, principally trachyandesite, gives it its characteristic grey-black colour visible in exposed cliff faces on the western and northern sides. Peregrine falcons have nested on the rock face since the early 2000s, their presence monitored by the RSPB. The One O'Clock Gun, fired daily except Sundays from the Half Moon Battery, uses the rock's elevation to propagate its report across the city, a tradition dating from 1861.
