Developed by Meraas and opened in phases from 2014, this open-air lifestyle district in the Al Wasl area of Dubai stretches along a pedestrianised boulevard flanked by low-rise buildings housing international fashion brands, restaurants, galleries, and entertainment venues. Unlike the enclosed mega-malls that dominate Dubai's retail landscape, City Walk was conceived as a European-style streetscape designed for walking, with mature trees, public art installations, and outdoor cafe terraces lining the pavements. The development occupies a substantial plot between Al Safa Street and Sheikh Zayed Road, with the Burj Khalifa visible to the south. The architecture deliberately breaks from Dubai's typical glass-tower aesthetic, employing exposed concrete, timber cladding, and planted facades to create a human-scale environment. Buildings rarely exceed four storeys, and setbacks at upper levels reduce the sense of enclosure at street level. Anchor attractions include Green Planet, a bio-dome housing over 3,000 tropical plants and animals in a recreated rainforest environment; Hub Zero, a gaming and virtual reality centre; Mattel Play Town, a children's entertainment facility; and a multiplex cinema. The retail mix emphasises independent and luxury brands not typically found in the larger malls, alongside flagship stores from international designers. A dedicated public art programme places large-scale murals and sculptures throughout the district, with works commissioned from international and regional street artists. Evening lighting design transforms the streetscape after dark, and seasonal events including outdoor markets, live music, and fashion pop-ups activate the central plaza. The district is accessible by taxi and private car, with multi-storey parking integrated into the development.
