The largest of Walt Disney World's four theme parks by area, covering approximately 580 acres, Disney's Animal Kingdom opened on 22 April 1998 as a combination of zoological park, botanical garden, and themed ride experience. The park is anchored by the 44-metre-tall Tree of Life, an artificial baobab tree whose trunk is carved with over 300 animal forms and which houses the It's Tough to be a Bug 4D theatre attraction. The park is divided into themed lands: Discovery Island at the centre, Africa with its Kilimanjaro Safaris ride through a 110-acre savannah populated by free-roaming giraffes, elephants, and lions; Asia featuring the Expedition Everest roller coaster and the Kali River Rapids raft ride; DinoLand U.S.A. with the DINOSAUR dark ride; and Pandora: The World of Avatar, opened in 2017, containing the Flight of Passage motion simulator and the Na'vi River Journey boat ride. Unlike traditional zoos, the animal habitats are designed without visible barriers where possible, using moats, rockwork, and vegetation to create sightlines that place guests and animals in seemingly shared landscapes. The park houses over 2,000 animals representing 300 species. Conservation programmes operated through the Disney Conservation Fund support field research in more than 115 countries. Operating hours vary seasonally. The park is located on Osceola Parkway in Bay Lake, Florida, accessible by Disney bus transport from all resort hotels and by car from Interstate 4. Evening events including the Rivers of Light night-time show and extended Pandora hours operate during peak seasons. The park employs over 3,000 cast members and houses approximately 2,000 animals across species including African elephants, white rhinoceros, Nile hippopotami, cheetahs, and western lowland gorillas. The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail provides a walking tour through a research station themed as a fictional African conservation project. Themed dining options include Tusker House, a character breakfast buffet, and Satu'li Canteen in Pandora.
