Walt Disney's final and most ambitious conceptual project, EPCOT opened on 1 October 1982 as the second theme park at Walt Disney World. The name originally stood for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, reflecting Disney's unrealised vision of a functioning planned city. The park that emerged after his death in 1966 reinterpreted the concept as a permanent world's fair celebrating human achievement, technology, and international culture across 305 acres. The park is divided into two themed areas. World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature occupy the front section beneath the iconic 55-metre geodesic sphere of Spaceship Earth, housing attractions focused on science, energy, space exploration, and environmental stewardship. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a reverse-launch indoor roller coaster, opened in 2022 as the park's most significant new ride in decades. World Showcase occupies the rear half of the park, arranged around a 1.6-kilometre lagoon with eleven permanent country pavilions representing Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Each pavilion features architecture, cuisine, shopping, entertainment, and attractions specific to its represented nation, staffed by cultural representatives from those countries. The EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival, running from mid-July through late November, adds over 30 temporary marketplace kiosks around the lagoon and attracts record attendance. The park is accessible from Interstate 4 and by Disney monorail from the Transportation and Ticket Center. Annual attendance exceeds 12 million visitors, making EPCOT the third most visited theme park in North America. The park underwent a multi-year transformation beginning in 2019, with new attractions, reimagined neighbourhoods, and updated landscaping designed to restore the sense of optimism and wonder that characterised its early years.
