Widely regarded as one of the most beautifully situated baseball stadiums in America, PNC Park occupies the north bank of the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh's North Shore neighbourhood, offering views from every seat across the water to the downtown skyline and the Roberto Clemente Bridge. The park opened on 31 March 2001 as the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, replacing the multi-purpose Three Rivers Stadium at a construction cost of 216 million dollars. Designed by HOK Sport in a retro-classic style inspired by Forbes Field, the Pirates' beloved former home that operated from 1909 to 1970, the stadium features a natural grass playing field, an asymmetric outfield, exposed steel structural elements, and a two-deck configuration that keeps all 38,362 seats close to the action. The right field wall, at just 320 feet from home plate, creates one of the shortest home run distances in Major League Baseball. The Riverwalk promenade along the stadium's northern and eastern perimeter provides free public access to the waterfront and connects to the city's extensive trail system. A statue of Bill Mazeroski, whose walk-off home run won the 1960 World Series, stands outside the main entrance. Additional statues honour Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, and Honus Wagner. The park is accessible by foot from downtown via the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol bridges, by the light rail T system to Allegheny station, and by water taxi from Station Square. Parking is available in North Shore surface lots. The stadium also hosts concerts, college football games, and community events during the baseball off-season. The stadium's intimate configuration, designed as a baseball-only venue rather than a multi-sport facility, was a deliberate departure from the sterile enclosed stadiums of the 1960s-1990s era. Local food vendors including Primanti Brothers sandwiches and Manny's BBQ have become as much a part of the game-day experience as the baseball itself. The park has hosted multiple Major League Baseball All-Star Week events since its opening.
