Opened as a dance hall back in 1943 on the site of an old amusement park off the Paral-lel, Sala Apolo is one of the oldest ballrooms in Europe and a living monument to Barcelona's musical history. Across the decades the venue on Nou de la Rambla has been a ballroom, a bingo, a skating club and a nightclub, evolving alongside the city while keeping its red-walled, faintly decadent charm. Its grand main room, with a sprung dancefloor and balcony, hosts everything from live concerts to club nights beneath its theatrical ceiling. Since 1996 it has been home to Nitsa Club, the electronic institution founded in 1993 that has brought names like Aphex Twin, Jeff Mills and Carl Craig to its decks. Its long-running Nasty Mondays party became a cult fixture, proving the venue could pack a dancefloor even at the start of the week. A second space, reborn as Astin after a refit, gave it a dedicated club room alongside the historic hall. The blend of heritage, live music and cutting-edge electronics makes it uniquely versatile. A genuine institution, Sala Apolo endures as one of Barcelona's most beloved venues, a Paral-lel landmark whose decades of history, Nitsa nights and broad programming have kept generations of the city dancing under its vermilion glow.
