A green expanse on the edge of downtown Miami, Bayfront Park stretches along the shore of Biscayne Bay, offering open lawns, public art and sweeping water views in the middle of the city. A popular gathering place for concerts, celebrations and quiet waterfront strolls, the park provides a welcome breathing space between the skyscrapers of the business district and the glittering bay beyond. The park occupies land reclaimed from the bay in the early twentieth century and was substantially redesigned in the 1980s by the noted Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who reshaped it as a work of public art in its own right. His vision wove together fountains, monuments, an amphitheatre and sculpted landforms, lending the green space an artistic coherence unusual for a downtown park. Among its features are a large performance amphitheatre that hosts concerts and events against a backdrop of the bay, a smaller bandshell, memorials including a striking monument to the Challenger space-shuttle crew, and a luminous fountain. The park is perhaps best known nationally as the site of Miami's televised New Year's Eve celebration, when an illuminated orb rises over the waterfront crowds. Its position at the mouth of the city's main avenue places it within easy reach of the cruise port, the arena and the downtown core. For visitors the park is free and open, a pleasant spot for a waterfront walk, a picnic or a concert, with the bay and skyline as a backdrop. It sits in downtown Miami beside the main boulevard and the bayside shops, easily reached on foot, by transit and by the elevated people-mover, and comes most alive during its many festivals and events. The artistic redesign by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi sets the park apart, weaving fountains, monuments, an amphitheatre and sculpted landforms into a coherent work of public art rather than a simple lawn. Best known nationally as the backdrop to Miami's televised New Year's Eve countdown, when an illuminated orb rises over the crowds, the park stays lively year-round with concerts, festivals and waterfront strolls beneath the downtown skyline.
