Rising along the downtown waterfront beside Biscayne Bay, the Kaseya Center is the premier indoor arena of Miami and the home of the city's professional basketball team. Opened on the final day of 1999, it replaced an older downtown arena and has anchored the bayfront entertainment district ever since, its sleek profile and bayside setting making it one of the more striking sports venues in the country. Over the years it has carried several corporate names before its current one. With a basketball capacity of around 19,600, the arena was designed for far more than sport. Eighty luxury suites, club levels and an adjoining waterfront theatre configuration allow it to host everything from championship games to concerts, family shows and award ceremonies, and it stages more than a hundred events each year for audiences from across South Florida. The building has been the stage for some of the region's greatest sporting moments, including the championship runs of its basketball tenants, whose passionate, celebrity-studded crowds give big games a distinctive energy. Its inaugural night was marked not by a game but by a concert from one of Miami's most famous musical daughters, setting the tone for a venue as devoted to entertainment as to athletics. Its location is a major part of the appeal. Set steps from the bay, the cruise port and the museums and gardens of the waterfront park district, and served directly by the city's elevated transit system, it is among the most accessible arenas anywhere, with sweeping skyline and water views from its concourses. For visitors, catching a game or a show at the Kaseya Center offers a quintessentially Miami experience, a blend of top-level sport, glamour and bayfront setting. As the centrepiece of the downtown waterfront, it remains one of the city's defining modern landmarks. Concessions, premium clubs and easy access by car, rail or on foot from downtown hotels add to the convenience, and a busy year-round schedule means there is almost always an event on the calendar. For sports fans and concertgoers alike, it remains the marquee indoor venue of the Miami waterfront.
