Volks is a long-standing nightclub on Brighton seafront, set within a historic colonnade at 3 The Colonnade, Madeira Drive. The structure was built more than a century ago beneath the Aquarium's sun terrace and has carried several names over the years; it takes its current name from Magnus Volk, the engineer whose pioneering electric railway still runs along the beach opposite, a name that conveniently also means "of the people" in German. Opening in 1996, the venue began life as a late-night salsa club before a powerful sound system and the arrival of jungle and rave nights transformed it into an underground hub for electronic music. Across two rooms it has become a Brighton institution for unpretentious, music-led clubbing, with a strong emphasis on drum and bass and other electronic styles and a reputation for nights that start late and finish later. Known for its RC1 sound system and "musically motivated" ethos, Volks has hosted a roll-call of respected dance acts over its decades on the seafront. In the warmer months it also opens during the day, offering outdoor seating, drinks, and sea views beside the beach on Madeira Drive.
