One of the great archaeological museums of Europe, housing the world's most comprehensive collection of Minoan civilisation artefacts in the city of Heraklion on the north coast of Crete. The museum's holdings span over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period through to the Roman era, with the Minoan material -- dating from approximately 2700 to 1450 BCE -- constituting the collection's unique strength and the primary reason for visiting. The Minoan galleries present finds from the great palace complexes of Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros: the snake goddess figurines, the bull's head rhyton, the Phaistos Disc with its undeciphered script, the Harvester Vase with its carved procession scene, and the gold Bee Pendant from Malia -- objects that define the visual identity of Minoan civilisation in the popular imagination. Frescoes recovered from Knossos, including the Bull-Leaping Fresco and the Prince of the Lilies, are displayed in their restored forms. The museum building, designed by architect Patroklos Karantinos in 1937 in an austere modernist style, underwent a comprehensive renovation completed in 2014 that modernised display cases, lighting, labelling, and climate control while preserving the original architectural character. The reinstallation organised the collection thematically rather than by site, allowing visitors to trace the development of Minoan art, religion, and technology across time. Located on Xanthoudidou Street in the centre of Heraklion, the museum is a 5-minute walk from the Venetian harbour fortress of Koules and the city's main commercial streets. Combined tickets with the archaeological site of Knossos, 5 kilometres south of the city, are available and are the standard format for visitors exploring Crete's Minoan heritage. Educational programmes for school groups and university archaeology students include curator-led tours that provide deeper analysis of individual objects and their excavation contexts. The museum shop sells replicas, academic publications, and Minoan-themed gifts.
