The former seat of government of the Republic of Venice for over a thousand years, this Gothic masterpiece on the Piazzetta San Marco is one of the supreme achievements of medieval secular architecture. The palace's famous facade, with its arcade of pointed arches supporting a loggia of quatrefoil tracery above which pink and white marble walls shimmer in reflected light from the lagoon, inverts the conventional expectation of a government building: delicate openwork below, solid mass above. Inside, the ceremonial rooms display the pictorial programme commissioned by the Republic to legitimise its power: vast canvases by Tintoretto, Veronese, and Titian fill walls and ceilings of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the Sala del Senato, and the Sala del Collegio. Tintoretto's Paradise in the Great Council Chamber, measuring 22 by 7 metres, was the world's largest oil painting on canvas at its completion in 1592 and remains among the largest ever created. The Secret Itineraries tour reveals the administrative machinery behind the Republic's elegant facade: torture chambers, the cramped pozzi (well) cells below water level, the piombi (lead) cells under the roof where Casanova was famously imprisoned, the Inquisitors' room, and the private offices of the ducal bureaucracy. The Bridge of Sighs, connecting the palace to the New Prisons across a narrow canal, is traversed during this tour. The palace forms the eastern boundary of Piazza San Marco and faces the lagoon across the Molo waterfront. Morning visits before 10am offer the best chance of experiencing the great state rooms without dense crowds. Admission includes access to all rooms on the standard route; the Secret Itineraries require separate advance booking. The San Marco vaporetto stop on Lines 1 and 2 provides waterfront access.
