The Chiesa della Pieta on the Riva degli Schiavoni, the church associated with the Ospedale della Pieta where Antonio Vivaldi served as violin master and composed the majority of his instrumental works between 1703 and 1740. The current building, designed by Giorgio Massari and completed in 1760, postdates Vivaldi's tenure but occupies the same site where his revolutionary concertos were first performed by the Pieta's famous all-female orchestra before audiences that included visiting royalty from across Europe. The church's oval interior, with its Tiepolo ceiling fresco depicting The Triumph of Faith, was designed with acoustic performance in mind: the shape produces a natural reverberation ideal for the baroque instrumental and vocal music that defined the institution. Today the church continues its musical function through a regular concert programme presenting Vivaldi's works performed by period-instrument ensembles in the space most intimately connected to their creation. The Ospedale della Pieta was one of four Venetian charitable institutions (ospedali) that trained orphaned and abandoned girls in music to professional standards, funding the hospitals through concert admission. Vivaldi's concertos, including The Four Seasons, were composed for these musicians, and the technical demands of his writing reflect the exceptional ability of performers trained from early childhood in an intensive conservatory environment. Concert performances take place several evenings per week year-round, with programmes centred on The Four Seasons and other Vivaldi concertos alongside works by his Venetian contemporaries. The Riva degli Schiavoni location, between San Zaccaria and the Arsenale, places the church on the principal waterfront promenade. San Zaccaria vaporetto stop on Lines 1 and 2 is a 2-minute walk.
