Set within historic Grant Park, just south-east of downtown, Zoo Atlanta is one of the oldest continuously operating zoos in the United States, its origins reaching back to 1889 when a local businessman donated a small menagerie of circus animals to the city. From those modest beginnings the zoo grew gradually for the next century before undergoing a celebrated, top-to-bottom reinvention in the 1980s that turned it from a struggling outfit into one of the most highly regarded mid-sized zoos in the country. The collection today includes more than a thousand animals representing some two hundred species, housed in habitats organised by region and ecosystem. A standout is the African Savanna, where giraffes, elephants, rhinos and meerkats roam expansive enclosures, while the Asian Forest features tigers, orangutans and clouded leopards under a canopy of mature trees. The zoo's best-known residents are its giant pandas. Atlanta was one of only a handful of American cities to host pandas on long-term loan from China, and successive generations born here have drawn enormous public affection. A purpose-built panda complex offers indoor and outdoor viewing areas and explains the global effort to conserve the species in the wild. Younger visitors gravitate to the zoo's petting area with goats and sheep, a playful gorilla family viewable from glass-fronted galleries, and a children's discovery zone packed with hands-on learning. Daily keeper talks, feeding sessions and seasonal events round out the visit. Conveniently reached by transit and a short drive from downtown attractions, with shaded walkways, themed cafés and well-spaced exhibits, Zoo Atlanta offers families and animal lovers an unhurried, conservation-minded afternoon and one of the more historic experiences available in the city. Tickets are reasonable, especially when booked online in advance, with annual memberships offering particularly good value for local families. A typical visit fills three to four hours, and combining the zoo with the historic Grant Park and the neighbouring Cyclorama makes for a full, rewarding south-side Atlanta day.
