The largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, Angel Island rises steeply from the water just north of San Francisco and across a narrow channel from Tiburon, its tree-covered slopes and 788-foot Mount Caroline Livermore offering some of the most expansive views anywhere in the region. Long inhabited by the Coast Miwok people, the island was named in 1775 by the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, and over the next two centuries became, in turn, a Civil War-era army post, a quarantine station, a wartime prisoner-of-war camp and, most significantly, a key entry point for immigrants arriving by ship from across the Pacific. The island's most celebrated, and sobering, chapter came at the Angel Island Immigration Station, in operation from 1910 to 1940, where hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mainly from China, Japan and other Asian countries, were detained for weeks or months under the discriminatory exclusion laws of the era. Hand-carved poems and inscriptions left by detainees on the wooden barracks walls survive today as a National Historic Landmark, and a visit to the restored facility is one of the most moving experiences offered anywhere in the bay. Now managed as a California state park, the island offers visitors thirteen miles of well-graded hiking and biking trails that loop the perimeter and climb to the summit, where the views span the Golden Gate, the city skyline and the wider bay area. Picnic grounds, restored military buildings, a small visitor centre and a seasonal café, plus electric tram tours of the perimeter road, round out the experience. A short ferry from San Francisco or Tiburon delivers visitors to the island in well under an hour. For travellers seeking a quieter, history-rich alternative to Alcatraz, Angel Island offers a beautiful, layered and unhurried day on the bay. Day visitors should plan for a full day on the island, bring water and snacks for the longer trails, and check ferry schedules carefully, as the last boat back to the mainland departs in the late afternoon. With its layered history, expansive views and welcome absence of cars, Angel Island remains one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences within easy reach of San Francisco.
