On San Antonio's celebrated River Walk, just steps from the Alamo, the Briscoe Western Art Museum is the only major institution in the city dedicated to the art, history and culture of the American West. Opened in October 2013 in the elegantly restored 1930 Hertzberg Library building, the museum was conceived by a coalition of local civic and business leaders, including its namesake former governor, as a long-overdue celebration of the region's frontier heritage. The collection spans roughly two centuries of Western art and material culture, from oil paintings and bronze sculpture by celebrated nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists such as Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and W. Herbert Dunton, to authentic ranching gear, Native American beadwork and pottery, vaquero saddles and a striking display of historic firearms. Standout pieces include a richly ornate saddle owned by Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa, a finely silver-trimmed parade saddle once carried by Theodore Roosevelt, and a large-scale outdoor sculpture overlooking the river of a vaquero on a rearing horse that has become one of the museum's most photographed features. Beyond the permanent galleries, regularly changing temporary exhibitions explore themes ranging from the artists who first interpreted the West for an eastern audience to the role of women, Tejanos and African Americans on the frontier, lending the collection a contemporary and inclusive perspective. A serene sculpture garden along the riverfront, free public events and a busy schedule of lectures, family days and live music broaden the appeal. Conveniently positioned beside the river and within walking distance of the Alamo and other downtown attractions, the Briscoe offers visitors a focused, vividly presented introduction to the rich, complicated story of the American West, in the heart of a city long shaped by that very heritage. Admission is modest, with regular free-admission days for residents and combined tickets for several of the city's museums available at a small saving. A typical visit fills around an hour and a half, leaving plenty of time to stroll the surrounding River Walk and visit other nearby San Antonio landmarks afterwards.
