On the celebrated River Walk in downtown San Antonio, Hopscotch is an immersive art experience that has quickly become one of the most popular non-traditional attractions in the city. Opened in April 2021 in a 20,000-square-foot space that was previously a Hilton Palacio del Rio retail level, the venue presents a sequence of more than a dozen large-scale interactive art installations created by an international roster of contemporary artists, each occupying its own dedicated room and designed to be walked through, photographed and shared on social media. The installations rotate periodically but typically include the venue's signature Daydream Room, a soaring installation by Brooklyn-based artist Rachel Bromberg of brightly coloured pendulous tendrils that visitors brush through, an infinity mirror room studded with hundreds of pinpoint lights, a kaleidoscopic projection chamber by artist collective NONOTAK, a swing room hung with hundreds of glowing pendant lamps, an immersive jungle by artist Hueman and a series of sensory rooms playing with sound, light and gentle motion. A particular emphasis is placed on works by local San Antonio and Texan artists, lending the venue a regional dimension that distinguishes it from the more international touring chains operating in the same immersive-art space. The visit unfolds at the visitor's own pace, typically taking around an hour and a half. Throughout, friendly staff are happy to photograph guests, share tips on the best angles for individual installations and explain the artists' intent behind each room. A relaxed cocktail bar called the Hopscotch Bar occupies the entry, offering creatively themed drinks that pair with several of the surrounding installations, and the venue is regularly open into the evening for adult-only sessions paired with DJ sets and themed events. Tickets are sold by timed entry and tend to be cheaper online.
