In the historic Ballard neighbourhood of north-west Seattle, the National Nordic Museum is the largest museum in North America dedicated to the heritage, culture and contemporary contributions of the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The museum opened in May 2018 in a striking new 57,000-square-foot building designed by the Seattle-based Mithun architecture firm, replacing an earlier museum dating back to 1980 housed in a converted elementary school down the street. The museum was elevated by an Act of Congress in 2020 to National status, becoming only the third officially designated National museum in the United States outside the Smithsonian system and lending it a particular prominence among American cultural institutions. The permanent exhibition, Nordic Journeys, traces the cultural history of the five Nordic countries from prehistoric Viking times through the great waves of nineteenth and early-twentieth-century emigration to North America. The galleries are organised both chronologically and thematically, with extensive displays of original textiles, decorative arts, folk costumes, religious objects and personal items associated with Nordic-American immigration to the Pacific Northwest, where Scandinavian communities played a defining role in the development of the fishing, logging and shipbuilding industries. A particular highlight is the museum's collection of contemporary Nordic design, with an extensive permanent gallery covering the celebrated post-war Scandinavian Modern movement of furniture and decorative arts, including pieces by Hans Wegner, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen and other twentieth-century masters whose work has come to define Scandinavian design worldwide. A rotating series of special exhibitions covers contemporary Nordic art, design, photography, film and political themes, with several touring exhibitions developed in collaboration with major Scandinavian institutions appearing in Seattle each year. The museum's on-site Freya Cafe serves Scandinavian-inspired light meals including open-faced sandwiches, cardamom buns and Nordic-style coffee, while a museum store sells contemporary Nordic design and craft goods. Modestly priced, the museum easily fills a half-day's visit.
