On Westheimer Road just west of Houston's central business district, the Galleria is the largest shopping centre in Texas and the seventh-largest shopping centre in the United States. The 2.4-million-square-foot complex opened in November 1970 as one of the first large-scale enclosed shopping centres in the southern United States and has been expanded several times since, most recently with a major renovation completed in 2017. The mall is operated by Simon Property Group and houses more than 400 individual stores and restaurants arranged across four levels and three connected wings. The complex is anchored by the regional Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and the smaller upscale Last Call by Neiman Marcus department stores, alongside flagship Texas locations of luxury brands including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, Dior and Tiffany & Co. The Galleria houses one of the largest concentrations of luxury retail in the southern United States. The mall's most distinctive single feature is the celebrated indoor ice-skating rink at the centre of the complex, occupying a sunken atrium directly beneath one of the soaring glass barrel-vault skylights that span the mall's central concourses. The full-size NHL-regulation skating rink operates year-round and is open to the public for general skating, with private lessons, hockey practice and the popular figure-skating school of the Galleria continuously available. The complex is connected to two major hotels, the Westin Galleria and the Westin Oaks, both directly accessible from the mall's upper levels through covered walkways. The on-site dining options include more than thirty restaurants ranging from a substantial food court on the lower level to high-end fine-dining options including Truluck's Seafood, Eddie V's Prime Seafood, the Mexican-themed Ouisie's Table and the upscale Frank's Americana Revival. Free to enter with extensive paid public parking in the attached multi-level garages and surrounding surface lots. The mall's convenient location at the Westheimer and Post Oak corridor makes it one of the most easily reached shopping destinations from downtown.
