Affectionately known to Sheffield as Corp, Corporation is an independent live music venue and nightclub on Milton Street in the city's Devonshire Quarter, long established as the home of rock and alternative music in the city. Since 1997 it has combined a packed programme of live gigs by touring bands with weekly alternative club nights, and it has been named by the rock press as one of the country's top clubs of its kind. Spread over several floors, it is one of the busiest and best-known independent venues in the region. The venue began life on Bank Street, in a building with a long nightclub history that had run through a succession of names from the late 1960s onwards before Corporation took it over in 1997. In 2002 the operation moved to its current Milton Street premises, a multi-floor complex containing several rooms and bars. Across its main arena, smaller rooms and a balcony space, the venue has a combined capacity well over a thousand, allowing it to stage everything from intimate shows to larger touring bills. As a live music venue, Corporation has hosted a long list of rock, metal and alternative acts, with many bands playing there on their way up before going on to much bigger stages. It has also been home to specialist events and festivals dedicated to industrial and electronic music, reinforcing its standing within the heavier and more underground ends of the scene. The club nights are equally central to its identity. Regular weekly events run across the week, mixing rock, metal, pop-punk, indie and alternative anthems, with long-running nights that have become institutions for students and music fans alike. On a typical weekend the venue can move between very different sounds across its multiple rooms in a single night. With its four rooms, multiple bars and three-decade history, Corporation has become a Sheffield institution and a fixture of the city's nightlife. Its blend of grassroots and touring live music with dedicated alternative club nights has earned it a loyal following and a national reputation as one of the UK's defining rock and alternative venues.
