Opened in July 2025 to replace two of Bradford's long-standing markets, Darley Street Market is a purpose-built, three-storey market hall with an outdoor courtyard in the heart of the city centre. Conceived as a state-of-the-art venue catering for shopping, socialising and cultural activity, it brought the traders of the former Kirkgate and Oastler markets together under one modern roof. The scheme had been in development since 2018 as part of a wider effort to revitalise Bradford's core shopping area. The market is arranged over three distinct floors. The ground-level Lifestyle Hall houses a range of shops, stalls and services alongside cafes, while the second-floor Fresh Food Hall brings together butchers, fishmongers, bakers, grocers and other fresh-produce traders, with pop-up spaces for seasonal offers and activities. Together these halls recreate the traditional indoor market in a contemporary, well-equipped setting. The top floor is home to the Darley Street Kitchen, a rooftop food hall serving an eat-in and takeaway mix of global street food and local favourites. This level also includes a bar, an outdoor terrace with views over the city, and a stage that hosts a programme of live music, along with screens showing films and live sport, making it a social and entertainment destination in its own right. Outside, an open courtyard features a large screen for video and live sport, outdoor seating and even a florist, and acts as a venue for special events throughout the year, from markets and cultural occasions to family activities, cooking demonstrations and a courtyard music festival. The food halls and shops keep daytime hours through the week, while the kitchen and bar stay open later, extending the market's life into the evening. By combining fresh-food and lifestyle trading with rooftop dining, live entertainment and outdoor events, Darley Street Market was designed to be far more than a traditional market. As the new anchor of Bradford's retail core, it aims to draw shoppers and visitors back into the city centre and to provide a flexible public space for the wider community.
