The Belfast Barge is Northern Ireland's only floating arts centre and maritime museum, moored on the River Lagan at Lanyon Quay in the heart of Belfast. Housed aboard the MV Confiance, a Dutch barge built in 1960 and sailed to the city from Holland in 2010, it opened to the public in 2012 and is owned and run by the not-for-profit charity Lagan Legacy. At the heart of the attraction is a maritime museum occupying the lower deck, whose permanent exhibition tells the story of the River Lagan and the men and women who worked along it. Featuring artefacts salvaged from the Harland and Wolff shipyard and a series of recorded testimonies, the museum preserves Belfast's rich industrial and shipbuilding heritage and is open daily for visitors, schools and outreach programmes. The barge's mission, as a social enterprise, is to present this history and regenerate its stretch of the riverside, encouraging both citizenship and economic development. Restored with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, it has been developed into a cultural hub that combines heritage with a lively programme of contemporary events. Beyond the museum, the upper deck houses a fully licensed riverside bar and cafe, while a state-of-the-art multi-purpose performance space makes the barge a genuine events venue. Equipped with a full PA, lighting, screen and projector, and licensed for weddings, it hosts concerts, theatre, cinema nights, family days and corporate functions, and is available for private, public and corporate hire. By uniting a maritime heritage museum, a waterside cafe-bar and a flexible performance space aboard a historic vessel, the Belfast Barge offers a genuinely unusual cultural destination. Its blend of history, hospitality and live events, set afloat on the Lagan in the shadow of the Waterfront Hall, makes it a distinctive and memorable part of Belfast's riverside.
