Channelling the glamour and grunge of New York dive bars, the Sunflower Lounge has been part of Birmingham's live music circuit since 2002. Found on Smallbrook Queensway beside the Chinese Quarter and close to Grand Central station, the Bullring and the Hippodrome, the intimate venue pairs a main-bar DJ space with a basement stage devoted to breaking and underground talent. Independently run, it has built a reputation for catching artists early, hosting intimate performances from the likes of Foals, Wolf Alice, Royal Blood, Dua Lipa, Peace, The Amazons and Superfood before they found wider fame. The layout splits the venue in two. Downstairs, a low-ceilinged cellar stage hosts gigs in a close, sweaty setting that puts the audience almost on top of the performers, while the ground-floor bar showcases forward-thinking DJs and provides a relaxed spot for a drink. The dive-bar styling, with its unpretentious character, low lighting and friendly atmosphere, has become as much a part of the appeal as the music. Beyond live shows, the bar runs regular DJ nights spanning sixties sounds, indie, funk, soul and rock and roll, typically across the busier end of the week, and pours an extensive range of international draught and bottled beers.
