Carved into two former railway tunnels beneath the streets of Aberdeen, the Tunnels has spent more than two decades as one of the north-east of Scotland's most respected grassroots live music venues. Reached by a step-free entrance on Carnegie's Brae in the city centre, a short walk from Union Street and the railway station, its two arch rooms each hold around 300 people and pair exposed brick with a punchy sound system and focused lighting. First and foremost a live venue, the Tunnels has hosted thousands of shows across rock, alternative, metal, indie, electronic and hip-hop. The room has given early stages to emerging local bands taking their first professional steps, while also welcoming established UK and international touring acts, helping shape the city's reputation for a committed and knowledgeable live music audience. Alongside gigs, the venue has long been home to club nights and alternative events that sit outside the mainstream. A subterranean space the team describe as a rave cave hosts DJs from around the world, with genre-specific nights, one-off events and residencies forming a key part of Aberdeen's night-time culture across the week and the weekend. The venue is also offered as a flexible creative space, available to hire for rehearsals, showcases, private functions, filming and photography. With professional sound and lighting and an experienced in-house team, it can be adapted from stripped-back setups to fully produced events, and it operates a Challenge 25 policy with wheelchair access and an accessible toilet on the same level. By keeping music at the centre of everything it does, the Tunnels has built a loyal following and a national profile out of an unusual underground setting. Its combination of intimate gig rooms, club programming and hireable space has made it a cornerstone of Aberdeen's cultural life for over twenty years.
