Born from the legacy of the Seventy One Brewing brewhouse on Ure Street, Canvas opened in 2025 as one of Dundee's most versatile new venues, a multi-purpose creative hub built inside a red-brick industrial building close to the University and the Whitehall Theatre. Conceived by 71 Brewing owner Duncan Alexander after an earlier, smaller bar and music venue, it arrived at a difficult time for Scottish nightlife and quickly became one of the city's most talked-about spaces. The venue is split between an indoor event space and an outdoor courtyard known as the Yard, with a tasting room for smaller gatherings and studio spaces for makers and artists. At its heart is a taproom that sits directly above the working Seventy One Brewing brewery, so the beer served upstairs is brewed only metres below, unfiltered and constantly evolving. The main room is engineered to transform, turning into a two-hundred-seat theatre, a cabaret-style music venue, a salsa dance floor or a nightclub depending on the event. Its calendar ranges across gigs, club nights, comedy, beer festivals, markets and food pop-ups, supported by a full in-house sound, lighting and audio-visual rig and a team that leans into ambitious, creative bookings. Alongside events, Canvas runs as a community-minded taproom pouring 71 Brewing's core range and experimental brews, with brewery tours and tastings available downstairs. The owners have spoken about doubling capacity to around a thousand by opening an upstairs level, while continuing to use the outdoor Yard for summer gigs, markets and casual drinking. Open from Thursday through Sunday, Canvas has positioned itself as a deliberate counter to a wave of venue closures in Dundee, combining craft beer, live music and flexible event hire under one roof. Its blend of brewery, gig space and creative playground reflects a wider trend of industrial buildings being reinvented as cultural hubs, and it has rapidly become a fixture of the city's nightlife revival.
