At the bustling Assembly Row shopping and entertainment district in the Boston suburb of Somerville just north of Cambridge, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston is one of more than two dozen LEGOLAND Discovery Centers operating worldwide as the indoor family-entertainment counterpart to the larger outdoor LEGOLAND theme parks. The 44,000-square-foot facility opened in May 2014, occupying the upper two levels of a substantial mixed-use commercial building at the heart of the Assembly Row complex. The Discovery Center concept is built around an indoor experience suitable for families with children aged 3 through 10. The facility is organised around the broader LEGO brand identity, with the celebrated interlocking plastic LEGO bricks (manufactured by the Danish toy company The LEGO Group since 1949) serving as the unifying theme throughout the venue. The standout single attraction is MINILAND Boston, a 1:50-scale miniature recreation of celebrated Boston landmarks constructed entirely from approximately 1.5 million individual LEGO bricks. The miniature city includes accurate-to-scale recreations of Fenway Park, the Bunker Hill Monument, Faneuil Hall, the Boston Common, the iconic Citgo Sign, the Old North Church, the central downtown skyline and several other celebrated Boston landmarks, with miniature LEGO figures populating the streets, ballparks and harbour. The model includes day-and-night lighting cycles that change every several minutes, along with several small animated scenes (a Red Sox game in progress at the miniature Fenway, a Duck Boat tour passing through the central downtown). Other major attractions include the celebrated LEGO Factory Tour (an interactive tour explaining the manufacturing process of actual LEGO bricks), the Build and Test interactive engineering challenge area, the Earthquake Tables (small platforms that vibrate at various intensities to test the stability of visitor-built LEGO structures), the LEGO Friends Heartlake Adventure Ride (a small dark ride based on the popular LEGO Friends product line), the Merlin's Apprentice ride (a small castle-themed kiddie ride) and the LEGO Racers Build & Test race-track area. A 4D-effect 360-degree theatre runs a rotating selection of short LEGO-themed films with special effects (vibrating seats, water spray, wind effects) synchronised to the on-screen action.
