A former television studio turned multi-purpose entertainment venue, Epic Studios on Magdalen Street is one of Norwich's most versatile spaces, combining an eight-hundred-and-fifty-capacity music hall with a fully functioning broadcast studio. The complex occupies the old Anglia Television site where programmes such as Trisha and Sale of the Century were once filmed. After ITV sold the Magdalen Street studios in 2006, the buildings were converted into a creative-industries hub, retaining their broadcast facilities while opening up the largest studio as a live-events space. Since first hosting gigs in 2007, the venue has built a reputation for an eclectic programme across many genres of music. Past performers have ranged from Public Service Broadcasting, the Buzzcocks and Embrace to Let's Eat Grandma and the Bluetones, and the space also stages comedy, wrestling, boxing, mixed martial arts, darts, conferences and family events. Its television heritage means it can be transformed for filming, and it has hosted broadcast wrestling among other productions. The main studio's flat floor and flexible rigging allow it to switch between seated shows, standing gigs and sporting events, while on-site tenants including film, music and education organisations keep the building in daily creative use. Free earplugs at the bar and warnings about lights and lasers reflect its full-scale production capabilities. Set in the buzzy NR3 district just north of the river, close to Magdalen Street's independent shops and eateries, Epic Studios is within walking distance of the city centre. Its blend of working television studio and live-music venue makes it a distinctive part of Norwich's cultural scene. The building's history as the home of regional institutions such as the long-running quiz Sale of the Century gives it a particular resonance for Norwich audiences, many of whom remember it as Anglia's studios. Its flexibility, from standing gigs to filmed sport, makes it one of the few venues in the city able to switch between such different uses.
