First opened in 1879 as a respectable alternative to the city's music halls, the Howard Assembly Room is a richly decorated concert hall tucked within the Leeds Grand Theatre complex on New Briggate. With its gilded, barrel-vaulted ceiling, leaded windows and prized acoustics, the room was praised in its early years for a warm, intimate character that still defines it today. Over the following century the space fell on harder times, serving as a cinema known as the Plaza and later as little more than storage, before the opera company Opera North restored it and reopened it as a performance venue in 2009. A subsequent eighteen-million-pound redevelopment, completed in 2021, gave the hall its own dedicated entrance on New Briggate, a glazed atrium and bar, and fully accessible front-of-house facilities. Curated by Opera North, the auditorium hosts a deliberately eclectic programme that ranges across folk, jazz, world and contemporary classical music, alongside film screenings, talks, workshops and installations. Past performers have included Brad Mehldau, the Unthanks, Abdullah Ibrahim and the Tallis Scholars, reflecting a booking policy that prizes quality and variety over any single genre. The flexible auditorium accommodates up to three hundred and thirty seated or four hundred and fifty standing, and can be reconfigured for conferences, exhibitions, dinners and weddings as well as concerts. The adjoining HAR bar pours local Kirkstall ales and cocktails alongside street food, while connected studios provide rehearsal and performance space large enough for a full orchestra. As part of Opera North, a registered charity, the venue channels income from its events into wider educational and community work across the north of England. Centrally placed a short walk from the train and bus stations, the Howard Assembly Room has re-established itself as one of the city's most characterful spaces for live performance.
