Tucked away in Newcastle's creative Ouseburn Valley, Little Buildings is a tiny grassroots music venue and rehearsal space that punches far above its size. Holding only around sixty people, the fully licensed room has earned a reputation as a vital first rung on the ladder for the region's emerging bands. The venue began life as a humble rehearsal space and grew its reputation through do-it-yourself, bring-your-own-bottle gigs before being taken over by its current owners in 2017, who added a stage, sound desk and bar. After being forced to leave its original premises, it eventually settled into its present home on Stepney Bank, weathering the disruption of the pandemic along the way. For artists, the venue provides in-house sound technicians, a full backline and even the ability to record live sets to a high standard, with three acoustically treated rooms available for rehearsal. While it promotes its own gigs, the stage is also open for hire to external promoters and DIY shows. Owners speak of roots running three centuries deep in the Ouseburn, and of an ethos built on local authenticity, affordability and looking after both artists and regulars. A stylish bar serving fairly priced drinks and its own speciality cocktails completes a setup that feels more like a family party than a formal venue. Open seven days a week in the heart of one of the city's most vibrant cultural quarters, Little Buildings sits among the breweries, studios and bars of the Ouseburn. For touring artists, local hopefuls and curious gig-goers alike, it remains one of Newcastle's most characterful small venues. Despite its tiny capacity, the venue has built a fierce loyalty among local musicians and gig-goers, who value the intimacy of a room where the audience is never more than a few feet from the stage. Its survival through difficult years for grassroots music has been held up as an example of the value of small, independent spaces, and it continues to host a near-nightly programme spanning gigs, open-mic sessions and community events in the heart of the Ouseburn.
