A cornerstone of Manchester's live-music scene for over three decades, Manchester Academy is a cluster of four independent concert venues on the University of Manchester campus on Oxford Road. Run by the Students' Union, the rooms range from intimate club spaces to a two-and-a-half-thousand-capacity main hall, catering to almost every size of touring act. Academy 1, opened in 1990 and later expanded, is the largest room, holding around two thousand six hundred standing, while Academy 2 at around nine hundred and fifty, Club Academy at around six hundred and fifty and Academy 3 at around four hundred and seventy host smaller shows. Unlike the many UK venues branded Academy, these are not part of the Academy Music Group. The venues carry a rich musical legacy, having hosted Manchester icons such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Oasis alongside international names from Amy Winehouse and Kylie Minogue to the Wu-Tang Clan. With over eighty acts a year on the Academy 1 stage alone, the complex offers a constant stream of live music. The smaller rooms in particular act as a launch pad, giving rising artists a chance to play their first headline shows in the city, while Club Academy also hosts DJ sets, hip-hop nights and events such as Bongo's Bingo. As a grassroots-minded operation, the Academy has partnered with the Music Venue Trust. Located on Oxford Road opposite the medical school, with strong transport links and a late licence, the venues sit at the heart of student Manchester. For locals and visiting fans alike, Manchester Academy remains one of the most prestigious mid-size live-music destinations in the north-west. The four-room model means an artist can return to the same complex at successive stages of their career, moving up from Academy 3 to the main hall as their audience grows, a progression that has played out for many of the acts now filling arenas. That sense of being part of a city's musical pipeline, combined with a central campus location, keeps the venues at the centre of Manchester's live scene.
