Hidden down a close in the heart of Edinburgh's Cowgate, La Belle Angele is one of the Scottish capital's most storied small venues, a custom-built room dedicated to live music, club nights and creative events. Originally formed in the early 1990s, the venue spent more than a decade as an underground institution before it was destroyed in the devastating Cowgate fire of 2002, finally returning to its original site after a complete rebuild in 2014. The venue holds around six hundred people in a standing configuration, with a smaller seated capacity for shows that call for it, arranged across a main floor and an upper level. Its purpose-built design, full bar and quality sound system create a flexible, intimate space that works equally well for a sweaty live gig or a late-night club event, and the room's layout keeps audiences close to the stage and the energy high. Programming reflects the venue's dual identity, with a strong focus on live music, performance art and exhibitions alongside the club nights for which it is famous. Its earlier incarnation hosted now-legendary early shows by major bands and pioneering club nights, and the reborn venue has continued that tradition with a busy calendar of gigs, DJ events and festival programming, including a presence during the Edinburgh Fringe. Its location off the Cowgate places it at the heart of Edinburgh's old town nightlife, in a historic district packed with bars, clubs and venues a short walk from the Royal Mile and the city centre. That setting, in one of the city's liveliest after-dark quarters, makes it a natural hub for music lovers and night-owls and easy to combine with the surrounding nightlife. By rebuilding a much-mourned institution and recommitting to live music and club culture, La Belle Angele has reclaimed its place at the centre of Edinburgh's scene. Its blend of an intimate purpose-built room, a strong music and club programme and a historic old-town location keeps it among the most cherished small venues in the city.
