Built by a temperance society that preached total abstinence from alcohol, the Rechabite Hall is now a multi-level entertainment complex whose bars cheerfully invert its founders' mission. The heritage-listed building at 224 William Street in Northbridge was constructed in 1924 as the headquarters of the Independent Order of Rechabites, a friendly society and part of the temperance movement, and it became one of Perth's most popular dance halls in the decades that followed. Designed by the noted architect Edwin Summerhayes in an inter-war classical style, the hall hosted balls, exhibitions, conferences, church services and elections, and served as a theatre and live-music venue after the Second World War. A fire in 1980 damaged the building, and it slipped into disrepair before closing in the early 2000s, though performances were still occasionally held there even as it deteriorated. Listed on the City of Perth heritage register in 2001 and the State Register of Heritage Places in 2002, the building was rescued by a major redevelopment that began in 2016. After an extensive restoration it reopened in November 2019 as The Rechabite, a complex of four levels wrapped around the original hall, retaining as much of the historic fabric as possible while adding a lift and modern facilities. The reborn venue runs from a basement club through a ground-floor eating house up to a rooftop bar, with the grand barrel-vaulted Rechabite Hall as its centrepiece, an iconic live-performance space hosting concerts, comedy festivals, drag shows, cabaret and cinema. The hall's vaulted ceiling is said to be among the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and the rooftop preserves graffiti from the building's shuttered years. Now a cornerstone of Northbridge's entertainment precinct, the Rechabite is the only temperance hall left in the area, of perhaps seven that once stood nearby. Its restoration turned a derelict heritage landmark into one of Perth's most distinctive cultural venues, layering modern hospitality and live performance onto a century of history.
