Famous for the tagline where pierogies meet punk, Warsaw is a music venue housed inside the Polish National Home in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. The building at 261 Driggs Avenue was established in 1914 as a cultural hub for the neighbourhood's large Polish-American community, in an area once roughly eighty percent Polish that came to be nicknamed Little Poland, and it served for decades as a gathering place that hosted operas and vaudeville-style acts. The space took on its current life in 2001, when it began staging punk and indie rock shows as a way to raise funds for community events. Those concerts became a cornerstone of the venue, and the slogan tying its Polish heritage to its musical programme, inspired by a restaurant review, has stuck ever since, with authentic pierogies, kielbasa and blintzes served from a bistro window beside the music hall. The hall itself, erected in 1914, holds up to around 1,000 people and is often sold out, with a small wooden stage framed by maroon curtains and ornate gold molding, even fitted with a trap door left over from its days hosting magicians. A renovation preserved the room's character, and the wider venue includes a fully stocked bar and a multi-level layout with mezzanine boxes, giving a total capacity of roughly 1,100 for larger configurations. Over the years Warsaw has hosted an eclectic roster of largely independent, alternative, punk and hip-hop acts, including Jack White, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Public Enemy, Weezer, Lorde and the Black Keys, alongside DJs and even occasional K-pop and children's shows. The money the concerts bring in has helped the Polish National Home continue to serve its community, keeping the two functions intertwined. A genuinely unusual room nestled in a residential neighbourhood, Warsaw has become a beloved staple of the Brooklyn music scene, prized for its intimacy and its lack of pretension. More than a century after the building opened, hot pierogies still share the bill with live music in one of the city's most characterful venues.
