Few cultural institutions in the American South gather as many art forms under one roof as the Woodruff Arts Center, a Midtown Atlanta campus that combines a symphony orchestra, a producing theatre and a major art museum on a single Peachtree Street block. Opened in October 1968 as the Memorial Arts Center, it was conceived partly as a tribute to 122 Atlanta arts patrons who died in the 1962 crash of a chartered jet at Orly Airport in Paris, a tragedy that pushed the city to build a permanent home for the arts. The complex is the umbrella for several resident organisations. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs in Symphony Hall; the Alliance Theatre, one of the country's most active regional theatres and a Tony Award winner, stages its seasons here; and the High Museum of Art, whose white Richard Meier-designed building opened in 1983, holds the campus's permanent collection. An arts-education division rounds out the programme, working with schools across Georgia. Renamed in 1982 for the businessman and philanthropist Robert W. Woodruff, whose foundation funded much of its expansion, the centre has grown well beyond its original footprint. Later additions by architects including Renzo Piano enlarged the High Museum and reshaped the surrounding plaza, making the site one of the largest arts complexes in the United States by attendance. For visitors, a single destination offers a classical concert, a new play and a gallery visit within a few steps of each other, and the campus anchors Midtown's cultural district alongside nearby galleries, restaurants and the green expanse of Piedmont Park. Its combination of memorial origins, resident companies and continuous architectural renewal keeps it central to Atlanta's artistic life. The campus is served directly by the Arts Center station on Atlanta's MARTA rail system, and the High Museum ranks among the leading art museums in the southeastern United States, holding collections of European, American, African and contemporary art. Across its theatre, concert and gallery programmes the centre draws hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, and its education work reaches students statewide, making it one of the largest combined arts organisations in the country.
