On the eastern end of the man-made Bluewaters Island just off the Jumeirah Beach Residence coastline in Dubai, Ain Dubai (literally "Eye of Dubai" in Arabic) is the tallest and largest observation wheel in the world by a substantial margin. The dramatic 250-metre (820-foot) wheel opened to the public on 21 October 2021 following a decade-long design-and-construction programme, surpassing the previous record-holding High Roller observation wheel in Las Vegas (167 metres) by some 50 percent and making Ain Dubai the most prominent single feature of the Dubai Marina skyline. The wheel was conceived in 2013 as the centrepiece of the man-made Bluewaters Island development, a 2-billion-dollar mixed-use island development on a 1.6-million-square-foot reclaimed island just off the Dubai Marina coastline. Construction of the wheel began in 2015 and proceeded through 2018, with the final lifting and installation of the central wheel rim onto the supporting steel A-frame structure in October 2018 representing one of the largest single lift operations ever undertaken in the construction industry. The wheel's structural design is exceptional. The 12,000-tonne steel-and-aluminium structure is supported by two enormous steel A-frame legs that anchor directly into the reinforced concrete foundation, with the central wheel rim suspended between the two A-frames by a complex network of structural cables. The wheel rotates around a central horizontal shaft on a single massive bearing assembly. The wheel carries 48 individual passenger cabins arranged around its outer rim, each cabin accommodating up to 40 passengers in air-conditioned comfort. The cabins are organised into three distinct seating configurations. The Observation Cabins (the majority of the 48 cabins) provide standard panoramic standing-and-seated viewing for general admission visitors. The Social Cabins (a smaller number of premium cabins) include lounge-style seating and an in-cabin host serving sparkling drinks and small bites. The Private Cabins (the smallest premium tier) accommodate small private parties. Each complete rotation of the wheel takes approximately 38 minutes, with most visitors completing two full rotations during a standard 76-minute ticketed experience. The wheel's observation level at the top of each rotation reaches an effective viewing height of approximately 200 metres above sea level, providing dramatic panoramic views of the entire Dubai Marina coastline, the iconic Palm Jumeirah artificial archipelago, the central downtown Dubai skyline and (on the clearest days) the distant Persian Gulf horizon.
