On the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa in downtown Dubai, At.mosphere is the highest restaurant in the world and one of the most architecturally distinctive fine-dining venues anywhere on the planet. The 210-seat restaurant occupies a substantial 2,300-square-metre space some 442 metres above ground level, providing diners with panoramic views of the entire central Dubai skyline, the Persian Gulf coastline, the Dubai Marina and (on the clearest days) the distant Hajar Mountains of the United Arab Emirates' eastern interior. The venue opened on 25 January 2011. The Burj Khalifa itself, the tower in which At.mosphere is housed, is the tallest building in the world. The 828-metre, 163-storey steel-and-concrete tower opened in January 2010 following a six-year construction programme led by the South Korean construction firm Samsung C&T in joint venture with the Belgian firm BESIX and the Emirati firm Arabtec. The tower was designed by the celebrated American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (the firm responsible for many of the tallest buildings in the world) under the lead design of the Chicago-based architect Adrian Smith. At.mosphere is divided into two principal venues sharing the same 122nd-floor level. The 110-seat At.mosphere Restaurant occupies the eastern wing of the floor and provides a formal contemporary international fine-dining experience under the leadership of an executive chef who has rotated through several internationally celebrated culinary figures since the venue's 2011 opening. The 100-seat At.mosphere Lounge occupies the western wing of the floor and provides a slightly more casual all-day dining-and-cocktails offering with a substantial outdoor terrace. The restaurant's interior design, by the celebrated Australian designer Adam D. Tihany, combines a contemporary international aesthetic with subtle Arabic motifs throughout. The dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides of the venue provide panoramic views in every direction, with the strict 1.6-metre setback from the building's exterior glazing line preserving the structural integrity of the tower's curtain wall. The menu changes continuously throughout the year and features a substantial selection of contemporary international dishes with several Middle Eastern accents. The signature six-course tasting menu (with optional wine pairing) is the most popular ordering option. Reservations are essential and typically required several weeks in advance for prime weekend dining slots.
